Accompanied driving from 17 (B17)
At 17, you are allowed to drive with an accompanying adult (at least 30 years old, at least five years of continuous possession of a Class B license, and a maximum of one point in Flensburg). The exam certificate is only valid in Germany.
Trailer regulation
With class B, you can tow trailers up to 750 kg. For heavier trailers, class BE or B96 is required.
Automatic regulation (B197)
Training partly on automatic, but driving a manual car is still permitted if at least 10 hours training on a manual plus a 15-minute exam on a manual have been completed.
Automatic restriction
Those who take the exam in an automatic transmission will receive a driving license with the key number 78 (automatic transmission only). An additional test is required for manual transmissions.
Rewrite
Holders of an old Class 3 driving license (before 1999) automatically have Class B. A conversion is only necessary for the new EU card driving license, not for the driving license itself.
